Couscous & World Heritage

Pour commencer l'année 2021, parlons patrimoine culinaire. Parlons de"Couscous" !

Couscous is a traditional dish that is shared by four French speaking African countries: Algeria, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. Once upon a time, France colonised these countries and French became the official language. Later, immigrants who originated from there moved to France bringing with them their culture along with the famous couscous recipes. It is a varied and complex dish but so succulent!

On the 17th December 2020, the couscous dish was "inscribed on UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage". This is such an important recognition as it allows the many couscous traditions and know-how to survive and be forever more inscribed into our world heritage. But it also shows how through international cooperation one can bring people and cultures together in a world that definitely needs it at the moment.

To learn more about the couscous traditions, its history and how it became to be part of our world Heritage, read more here (in French, of course!): https://en.unesco.org/news/unescos-inscription-couscous-traditions-example-international-cultural-cooperation

On that note, "bon appétit"!
